Go the Distance
From college-level games to the minor leagues, the sports scene in El Paso offers fans and athletes of all kinds various opportunities to get out and play or cheer from the stands.
Southwest University Park
Home to the San Diego Padres Triple-A affiliate Chihuahuas baseball team, this state-of-the-art venue, located in the center of downtown, was designed by the same team who brought PETCO Park and Yankee Stadium to life and has become a landmark of the city. Order some Cracker Jacks and cheer on the Chihuahuas during the team's April through September season.
El Paso Locomotive
In March 2019, the city welcomed a new minor-league soccer team — El Paso Locomotive FC — in the United Soccer League Championship division, with games running through October at Southwest University Park and tickets ranging from $5 to $49. The team's players hail from all over the world.
Visitors can enjoy year-round sports thanks to orange-clad college athletes at UTEP. The campus also hosts the Sun Bowl, one of the longest-running collegiate football bowl games in the United States, each year. The fun kicks off with a family-friendly parade that doubles as a pep rally for the bowl game featuring teams from the ACC and Pac-12. In 2019, the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade takes place Nov. 28, and the Hyundai Sun Bowl kicks off Dec. 31.
Sun City is golfers' paradise, with numerous private and municipal courses spread across town. Designed by famed golf course architect Tom Fazio, Butterfield Trail Golf Club was named the No. 3 municipal course in America by Golfweek magazine from 2009 to 2015. Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course embraces the landscape with awe-inspiring views over 27 holes of championship-style golf that's earned accolades from Golf Digest, Texas Golfer, and the United States Golf Association.
