ICKY: A Radio Musical – Way back in the days before the end of The Big Sick, students everywhere were forced to stare at computer screens featuring live video feeds of their classmates. This was happening in bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens across the country and the world. With the help (and the subconscious musings) of a dreamer named Halley, a team of superheroes discover that unity and togetherness can get them through any sicky situation.
The show provides a child’s perspective of the pandemic lockdown. The 17 person creative team was led by producer Katie Stone, directed by Jonathan Dunski, and based on the original screenplay by Sarin West. Music was composed by Jules Warren and Robb Janov, arranged by music director Sage Sarason. Albuquerque’s first poet laureate Hakim Bellamy wrote the lyrics. The musical stars 18 children, ranging in age from 4 to 17 years old, and features a full band, all recorded during CoViD-19, with strict adherence to some the nation’s most stringent CoViD-19 lockdown rules in New Mexico.
The screenplay is based on interviews with the children about CoViD-19 and was created to support The Children’s Hour Kids Crew through the uncertainty and anxiety they were experiencing. This project also served as an economic stimulus for Albuquerque’s creative professionals whose work was halted by CoViD-19. ICKY: The Radio Musical marks this extraordinary time in history from a child’s point of view.
“With its deeply moving and catchy lyrics set to infectious beats, ICKY was a lifeline through the darkest winter of our lifetimes. It’s what happens when our challenges push us to find the best in ourselves and thrive. Not only did we create an amazing work of radio artistry, but it became a tool to help families and children process our emotional reactions to the pandemic. I hope that ICKY opens up family conversations about how we are feeling.” — Katie Stone, Producer & “Mom”
