Alto, NM — The visually striking, seven storied Spencer Theater has raised the curtain on some of the finest performers and companies of our time, including Dave Brubeck, Ray Price, Smothers Brothers, Hal Holbrook, Oak Ridge Boys, and Tanya Tucker, as well as the Russian National Ballet, West Side Story and Cats. The creation of this stunning home for the performing arts was a long-held dream for the late Jackie Spencer, who personally funded the amazing project, considered one of the greatest gifts to the state in New Mexican history. Renowned architect Antoine Predock designed the theater to silhouette Sierra Blanca, the glacial peak in the near distance. The building, made from 440 tons of mica-flecked Spanish limestone, gleams in the desert light. A step-like exterior fountain and a multifaceted glass lobby further intrigue.
The 50,000-square-foot, 514-seat theater is located on 72 acres in the Ruidoso area and acts as a cultural oasis. Jackie Spencer additionally commissioned the world’s foremost glass artist, Dale Chihuly, to create permanent installations that sparkle with color regardless of season. Indulge in your love of theater throughout the year, in genres as diverse as country to ’50s rock ‘n’ roll, big band, Broadway musicals, comedy, and international folk dance. Gaze at inspiring architecture with a visit to the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts, honored as one of the top seven theaters in the world. The Spencer Theater is available to rent for weddings and other private events.
